Now I found out about these righteous dudes about three years ago when my lovebucket introduced them to me. The WAVE PICTURES. Consisting of David Tattersall on vocals and geetar, Franic Rozycki on the bass guitar, and Jonny Helm on drums, whom also has a buddahful singing voice. These boys have been around for decades with their charming romanticism and trickful licks. They have five self released albums and seven with Moshi Moshi [who also deal with such cool cats as Lykke Li, Bloc Party, Hot Chip and Florence & the Machine]
I achoolly just saw a gig of theirs in Brighton lastnight, and had a cheeky chat with David Tattersall. He is an absolute snake charmer, and too cool for his own good. I remember when I saw him back in Chicago at Schubas and asked him to sign something for my boyfriend. And he just replied
'how could I possibly write something to someone I don't know. It'd be an empty n' false message to a stranger, plus he could be a twat' [[take note, this is total paraphrasing, this was two years ago after a few too many brewskies]]
That night they also stopped halfway through the gig realising they didn't have a place to stay and asked if they could crash someones pad. Fuckin' class.
Basically, these guys are well worth knowing. I love 'em to bits. Here's some clips of the show last night, as well as some youtubeage.
Get involved folks, you really don't wanna miss out on this one.
Now, I have noticed that if you're paroozing at this from a fancy phone you just see blank space when you should be seeing tasty music videos. I do apologize. It's a technical difficulty that I am working on. But if you wanna have a proper listen, whip out yee ol' laptop and give it a listen.
Anyways, back to the fun shtuff. Music. Filling, lovely, music.
Today, I'm doing a throwback favorite. American indie rock band with babe magnet James Mercer
The SHINS!!!
Now for many of you, this is an obvious one. Saying that, a lot of my Engrish friends either haven't heard of them, or if they have haven't listened. Why ? I can't say. But I can tell you that this is as important to know about as your ABC's. So pay attention.
THE BEGINNING -
Soooo James Mercer started a band called Flake Music with guitarist Neal Langford, Phil Higgs and Marty Crandall on bass, andd Jesse Sandoval on the drum drums. They toured around with modest mouse for a bit [sweeeeeet] After five years, the band disintegrated and Mercer made a 7'' EP with Omnibus Records called Nature Bears a Vaccuum. Thinking it'd be a one off, James was surprised that the single recieved so much attention and decided it'd be best to assemble a full band.
Mercer started off by snatching babe magnet numero dos, Martin Crandall on keys.
and Dave Hernandez from punk band Scared of Chaka , to slap some bassss
Although sadly half way through the first album Dave left and was replaced by Neal Langford.
Then BOOM, they had a baby, and named it THE SHINS
with their first album Oh, Inverted World
Excellent stuff. So to make a long story short, they were with Sub Pop for a bit, were featured in some shows and films [including Sponge Bob Square Pants] They went through different members of - Neal Langford, Mikael Yeung, Jesse Sandoval, Dave Hernandez, Eric Johnson, Ron Lewis, and Martin
Crandall.
But today, THE SHINS consist of
James Mercer [lead vocals, guitar] Joe Plummer [drums && percussion] Yuuki Matthews [keyboards, bass, backing vocals] Jessica Dobson [guitar & backing vocals] and Richard Swift [keyboards, organ, piano, percussion, drone box, synthesizers & backing vocals - whatta dude]
All legends among men.
I don't wanna say much more, besides listen. To every, single, song.
Thank you Tyler the Creator, for finding this little ball of magic. && Thank you mama Cheryl Harris for lettin' Thebe [Earl Sweatshirt] come back from Samoa. Seems like he's doing muchhh better meow.
Need something to bob you're head to? Feet getting bored of standing so still ? Look no further my friends. Clearly it's time to bring out the bongos, and there is no better than the
Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band
{appropriately called.} Michael is from MGM Records and started this shindig up in 72 with some random peeps. Infact, the band has never had any official members, just bums that like to jam. You may already know them, they've covered a lot of classic 70s' songs, most famous being Apache - written by Jerry Lordan
All delicious options. But nowadahhs, Incredible Bongo Band is mainly used in hip-hop and drum & bass. But that doesn't mean people of the world shouldn't still listen to them on their own. skeet skeet
Dirty Southern jazz, previously known as Two Shades Deep, OutKast. Das Right Mothanuckks
For all ya'lls that don't know, André 3000 and Big Boi started hitting it off in 1992. They bumming around Georgia throwing jazz, R&B, electro, funk, soul, blues, and just some overall delicious shenanigans together that just makes your legs combust into uncontrollable jive.
Everyone knows OutKast for their 'Hey ya' single and 'Roses.' Both boomin' songs. But I think a lot of people are missing out on what OutKast really is.
Their first album southernplayalisticadillacmuzik that came out in '94 has so much funk and babymakingmusic in it, it's almost silly. With southern slanging and telling life as black kids surviving in the south, it's not only happiness for the ears, but educational for the mind-brain.
Then there's, ATliens. It's intro sets the tone so beautifully, as sweet as fleetwood with lovin' spoonful thrown in. Ferkin genius.
But one of my flavorite albums that I think is overlooked, Idlewild. Came out in 2006 with an accompanied film. That's right, OutKast has a dog damn film.
It was produced with LaFace records, who they started off with at the beginning. The album has 25 eargasmic tuneage, including one song that's mainly Big Boi featured with Sleepy Brown & Scar called Morris Brown. That song also features the Morris Brown University's Marching Band (hence the name, ya dig) Peaches, The Train, Mutron Angel, is alll good. I mean The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Uncut and Q magazine all gave the album four outta five, which ain't too shabby. Long story short, Check it. xx
