This dude is an American singer/song writer/God. He's from Detroit, and is famous for his song Chicago off his Illinois album.
His songs make me cry, so hard, because I am so dog damn happy. He fills you with so many emotions that it reminds you what it is to feel.
He's multi-talented instrumental wise. I once read that he knew how to play 27 instruments, although I'm only aware of his abilities with guitar, bass, banjo [which he, wa-hales on] piano, xylophone, vibraphone, English horn, oboe, drums, recorder, and a theremin.
And he's fun. I'm convinced at times he's actually made of magic. Born from a pair of hippies it's no wonder he dresses like this >>>

He has eleven albums out. The one that I recommend to get involved with first is called Illinois [2005.] After you listen to this album you will instantly fall in love and do the rest of researching for yourself. Instalove.

Fun Fact, Sufjan once decided he was gonna travel around and make an album per state. He called it the appropriately 'The Fifty State Project'
He started with Michigan, then Illinois, then announced he actually doesn't intend to do it, it was more of a promotional gimmick. Cheers for that Suffy.
