19.2.14 DEATH GRIPS

DEATH GRIPS

I specifically like these punks caws they stood up Lollapalooza, claimed to make a film about male prostitution featuring Robert Patterson [hollahh] and used the drummer's Zach Hill's erect willy as an album cover.

Top lads.

Stefan Burnett {Rapper, yo}  & Zach Hill {Professional Beat Dropper}

These dudes are heavy experimental hip hop that's newfangled and extremely humorous. I personally enjoy their debut album The Money Store
It has a trippy electrofonic buzz covering it all with the same assaulting vibe of words.

See how you feel

xx

18.2.14 Modern Witch

Modern Witch

This shiz is dark. and ferkin' freaky. and I ryke it.

It instantly makes you feel like you've just taken a pill that has thrown you on a downward spiral. You can't really get a grasp on to what's happening because there is this constant haunting eerie bass [?] being dropped. But you can't get away from it. It's just so, good.

You could call it goth-stained electronica, or you could just call it weird.

I call it great.

Check out their facebook page, as they are always topping the weird. Including the fact they had a release of an album Unknown Domain that only had 100 physical copies, all of which were cassettes.
Imagine that !

17.2.14 Drunk Mums

Drunk Mums

Today's spectacle, Drunk Mums. Band from down under has released their first EP Eventual Ghost in May last year. It's a bit of 70s' garage band meets Cali punk, almost dirty blues. && they have a disposition for rowdiness. Verd on the street, these dudes are constantly getting kicked out of venues for doing things like peeing in the corner. Classssayyyy.

It's the kinda shit that makes you wanna quite your day job and just go around flipping people the bird.
And it's gooooood.

Check it
xx

16.2.14 MØ

BABE ALERT!

MØ [which translates to virgin in deutschland ] was born Karen Marie Ørsted.

So far she only has one EP and a good handful of singles. But a little bird tells me that she is releasing her first full album March 10th, and it shall be named :

No Mythologies to Follow

Shweet.

Well, until then we have plenty of tasters to enjoy

xx

Don't wanna dance _ Mø

XXX _ MØ

15.2.14 Rosewood Thieves

The Rosewood Thieves

Rosewood Thieves has a vintage roots folk sound, with their own coeval tones.
New York members include Erick Jordan [voice y guitar] Paul Jenkins [guitar] Mackenzie Vernacchio [mothanuckin' organ, and Wurlitzer] Jon Estes [bass] && Mark Bordenet [drums]

This band assembled their first EP in 2006 called From the Decker House, which has six tracks as well as a limited time three additional songs to the EP. Skeet

Then there was the 2007 EP Lonesome, and there first full length album Rise & Shine a year later.
 All highly recommended.

14.2.14 HOCKEYSMITH

Now these chicks are interesting. Considering they're a sister act from Falmouth, Cornwall, they have come up with a true dark nebulous of tones. Tumult being thrown left and right, it's a frenzy of dark dance music. You can't really tell what's what, but that's the biggest part of their charm. These dudes are making music out of their caravan as well. Livin' the mothanuckin' dream. If you're into warpaint orrr perhaps slowdive, you'd jam to these funkerdoodles.

Give it a listen - Annie Hockeysmith & Georgie Hockeysmith.

You're favorite sinners.

13.2.14 BIG DEAL

Picture from here

I know what you're thinking, another guy gal fuzz pop band.
But I like them. So I am sharing.

18 year old Brit chick with a well aged 29 Americano man.  Boy taught girl to play guitar, and since they've been under plenty of perusal. They sing of teenage angst and slow maturing. They cover the spectrum of passionate longing and sensual intimacy. We all think they're bumpin' uglies, basically.

Saying that, it's been noted that they sing in unison,  implying that they aren't directing this sexual tension towards each other. Who really knows. I don't really care. I just like their tunes.

Fuzzed mellow pop, taking away percussion. Just voices and guitar. Dig it.

He is Kacey Underwood, and she is Alice Costelloe. And together, they make sweet sweet music.
BIG DEAL

12.2.14 SUFJAN STEVENS

Sufjan Stevens

Picture from here

This dude is an American singer/song writer/God. He's from Detroit, and is famous for his song Chicago off his Illinois album.

His songs make me cry, so hard, because I am so dog damn happy. He fills you with so many emotions that it reminds you what it is to feel.

He's multi-talented instrumental wise. I once read that he knew how to play 27 instruments, although I'm only aware of his abilities with guitar, bass, banjo [which he, wa-hales on] piano, xylophone, vibraphone, English horn, oboe, drums, recorder, and a theremin.

And he's fun. I'm convinced at times he's actually made of magic. Born from a pair of hippies it's no wonder he dresses like this >>>

&& here

&&& here

He has eleven albums out. The one that I recommend to get involved with first is called Illinois [2005.] After you listen to this album you will instantly fall in love and do the rest of researching for yourself. Instalove.

This is the first song off his Illinois album

And his full album Michigan

Fun Fact, Sufjan once decided he was gonna travel around and make an album per state. He called it the appropriately 'The Fifty State Project'
He started with Michigan, then Illinois, then announced he actually doesn't intend to do it, it was more of a promotional gimmick. Cheers for that Suffy.

Til next time

11.2.14 BLACK YAYA

Picture From Here

Black Yaya is a pop project byDavid Ivar with front man and songwriter Herman Dune. They paint, he sings [Hermando], and his voice reminds me of a country jesus ?

Atleast it does in his acoustic delight of Gimme a Gun.

His first single, Paint a Smile on Me, is full of color and fuzzy tingly feelings that makes you dance in the street and wanna kiss strangers. And with his song Glad Tidings, it has more of a mellow 70s' vibe going for it, it's nummy. I particularly lerve the lyrics to Glad Tidings, the song kicks off with

"You got involved with some crooked cats
You thought they were blood but it wasn’t like that
They got you in trouble and they just ran like rats.."

Dune has a way with words.

Black Yaya is produced under Yuksek's label Partyfine. Dune has just finished up his first tour in the UK but is continuing around Europe in Septiembre, so keep an eye out kids.

Also, get updates on his craycray website and see what they're up to on a weekly basis.

10.2.14 JOHN WIZARD

Self titled album John Wizard is funk, electronica, happy dappy afropop & It is debuted by South African John Withers on his travels. Word on the street is that his day job is writing jingles for commercials whilst he travels around and makes musical magic for his own pleasures {and all of ours}  Although he has some vocal input by Emmanuel Nzaramba-a Rwandan refugee- everything else is all Withers. I can honestly say this album is top of 2013, and possibly of 14. Check out his self titled album with the opening track of Tek Lek Schrempf thats has wicked piano riffs and then soars straight into 80s'-esc geetair licks. If you close your eyes whilst listening to it, you may be convinced your riding a unicorn.

9.2.14 THE WAVE PICTURES

Now I found out about these righteous dudes about three years ago when my lovebucket introduced them to me. The WAVE PICTURES. Consisting of David Tattersall on vocals and geetar, Franic Rozycki on the bass guitar, and Jonny Helm on drums, whom also has a buddahful singing voice. These boys have been around for decades with their charming romanticism and trickful licks. They have five self released albums and seven with Moshi Moshi [who also deal with such cool cats as Lykke Li, Bloc Party, Hot Chip and Florence & the Machine]

I achoolly just saw a gig of theirs in Brighton lastnight, and had a cheeky chat with David Tattersall. He is an absolute snake charmer, and too cool for his own good. I remember when I saw him back in Chicago at Schubas and asked him to sign something for my boyfriend. And he just replied

'how could I possibly write something to someone I don't know. It'd be an empty n' false message to a stranger, plus he could be a twat' [[take note, this is total paraphrasing, this was two years ago after a few too many brewskies]]

That night they also stopped halfway through the gig realising they didn't have a place to stay and asked if they could crash someones pad. Fuckin' class.

Basically, these guys are well worth knowing. I love 'em to bits. Here's some clips of the show last night, as well as some youtubeage.

Get involved folks, you really don't wanna miss out on this one.
xx

And some of their own music videos to give you a better picture, nom nom nom

If you wanna hear more from the dudes mouths, I found a sweet little interview with them on Muso's Guide.

8.2.14 THE SHINS

Now, I have noticed that if you're paroozing at this from a fancy phone you just see blank space when you should be seeing tasty music videos. I do apologize. It's a technical difficulty that I am working on. But if you wanna have a proper listen, whip out yee ol' laptop and give it a listen.

Anyways, back to the fun shtuff. Music. Filling, lovely, music.

Today, I'm doing a throwback favorite. American indie rock band with babe magnet James Mercer

The SHINS!!!

Now for many of you, this is an obvious one. Saying that, a lot of my Engrish friends either haven't heard of them, or if they have haven't listened.

Why ? I can't say. But I can tell you that this is as important to know about as your ABC's. So pay attention.

THE BEGINNING -

Soooo James Mercer started a band called Flake Music with guitarist Neal Langford, Phil Higgs and Marty Crandall on bass, andd Jesse Sandoval on the drum drums. They toured around with modest mouse for a bit [sweeeeeet] After five years, the band disintegrated  and  Mercer made a 7'' EP with Omnibus Records called Nature Bears a Vaccuum. Thinking it'd be a one off, James was surprised that the single recieved so much attention and decided it'd be best to assemble a full band.

Mercer started off by snatching babe magnet numero dos, Martin Crandall on keys.

and Dave Hernandez from punk band Scared of Chaka , to slap some bassss

Although sadly half way through the first album Dave left and was replaced by Neal Langford.
Then BOOM, they had a baby, and named it THE SHINS

with their first album Oh, Inverted World

Excellent stuff. So to make a long story short, they were with Sub Pop for a bit, were featured in some shows and films [including Sponge Bob Square Pants] They went through different members of - Neal Langford, Mikael Yeung, Jesse Sandoval, Dave Hernandez, Eric Johnson, Ron Lewis, and Martin
Crandall.

But today, THE SHINS consist of
James Mercer [lead vocals, guitar] Joe Plummer [drums && percussion] Yuuki Matthews [keyboards, bass, backing vocals] Jessica Dobson [guitar & backing vocals] and Richard Swift [keyboards, organ, piano, percussion, drone box, synthesizers & backing vocals - whatta dude]
All legends among men.
I don't wanna say much more, besides listen. To every, single, song.

and enjoy

xx

6.2.14 EARL SWEATSHIRT

This has been, the best, most delicious thing, of 2013. I don't even wanna discuss.

Just listen.

Thank you Tyler the Creator, for finding this little ball of magic. && Thank you mama Cheryl Harris for lettin' Thebe [Earl Sweatshirt] come back from Samoa. Seems like he's doing muchhh better meow.
